This is a Catholic holiday. The ancient Celts celebrated their New Year - Samhain (Samheyn). In
late October, they came back with their last harvest. They believed that the
night before New Year opens the border between the dead and the living and the
dead shadows of the past year drop onto the land in search of living bodies to
possess. To protect themselves from the shadows, people tried to look as
frightening as possible - dressed in animal skins and heads, hoping to frighten
the spirits away. They gave them food to eat and hoped that they would not
insist on entering their homes. And people gathered around bonfires, which were
lit up by the Druid priests. At these gatherings predictions for the winter were
made and animals were sacrificed. At the end of each gathering, everybody would
take a coal from the fire.

In the ancient past candles served for lighting and performance of religious rituals. This is
evidenced by even the name - the words sacred and candle have a common root. The
candle flame is a symbol of the human soul and its relationship with all
spiritual forces in the Universe. Therefore, the candle is an obligatory
attribute in magic and Christian practice alike. The candle conducts human
desires to the transcendental sphere.

A white candle symbolizes spiritual purification and protection.
A yellow candle should be used before an exam or at a time when you must take an important decision
Green wax symbolizes vital force, abundance, luck and harmony.

Watching the flame of a burning candle on the night of
Halloween, you can peek into the future.

Girls who go with lantern to a stream or river at night,
can see the image of their future husbands in the reflection.

It is believed that if a man lit an orange candle and let it burn until morning, he will be blessed with good luck.

If a candle flame suddenly turns blue, there is a spirit around.

You should always burn new candles on Halloween. Otherwise, you may incur bad luck and strange things may start happening.
